The above was the 1847 motto of the newspaper.
“The North Star, antislavery newspaper published by African American abolitionist Frederick Douglass. First published on December 3, 1847, using funds Douglass earned during a speaking tour in Great Britain and Ireland, The North Star soon developed into one of the most influential African American antislavery publications of the pre-Civil War era. The name of the newspaper paid homage to the fact that escaping slaves used the North Star in the night sky to guide them to freedom. It was published in Rochester, New York, a city known for its opposition to slavery.”
At times I seriously doubt in human progress and indeed in the actual direction of time. Why?
The motto dates from 1847 – it is 178 years old! Assuming the current year actually is 2025 (feel free to correct me if I’m wrong)?
This must be the way to write about human equality (never really understood why it is so complicated, everyone has a mechanical mother and father, everyone thus far… the rest is individual – it does not define your humaneness).
We humans are all created equal. We humans have rights that are universal. Human rights. That’s it (that being said we do have obligations too, next generation).
– What about the “GOD” bit?
– Well firstly, the context is 1847? Secondly? It is about personal conviction. And thirdly, why would that “bit” bother you in this context?
You could easily* replace the word/sentence (namespace) with anything that you feel comfortable with, right? How would that change the rest of the statement below?
RIGHT IS OF NO SEX — TRUTH IS OF NO COLOR — [NAMESPACE], AND WE ARE BRETHREN.
* Depending on where you happen to be born or live of course (it may be unlawful to do so; saying it or bothering you). You may not be living in a democratic state/setting, where that would be your fundamental right.
